A Solar Calculator Built On A Python-based Web App Helps Our Client’s End Users to Assess Long-term Benefits by Switching to Solar

Our client is a pioneer in the renewable energy sector selling solar panels and related equipment along with offering installation services. The C-level management at the organization is extremely passionate about getting more end users to adapt to the idea of renewable energy. As active environmentalists themselves, they don’t just work towards fulfilling their organizational objectives, but also the social objectives.

To ease the transition to solar for people, the team came up with the idea of an application that helps calculate the savings incurred upon switching to solar as opposed to staying on the grid. By showing tangible proof that going solar was cost-effective, the client wanted to get more people to shift to clean and renewable energy.

Key Challenges:

 Our client had an Excel template to calculate the cost of installing solar panels and the cost difference between solar and regular energy options. And they were facing the following challenges:

  • There was a large amount of data that had to be entered into Excel sheets and then processed manually to generate results. This was putting undue pressure on our client’s workforce.
  • As the calculations were being done party using manual data entry, there was always a chance of errors and incorrect results.
  • The client could not make use of third-party integrations as they were using an Excel sheet for the task.
  • Exporting the results and reports generated in Excel needed to be shared with end-users and other stakeholders. However, converting the reports into visually pleasing PDF files was a tough task.
  • As Excel was being used for the calculations, the formula was not accessible to people unless they contacted our client. This limited the use and potential of the formula designed by our client.

After carefully understanding the challenges faced by our client and analyzing their current working models, the team at SynergyTop outlined the following business needs:

  • The client needed to transfer the written function into a scalable code that can be further used as the base for a web application.
  • The web app had to be responsive in order to be accessible on any device. This would ensure that customers don’t get left out based on what device they used.
  • High accuracy in the app and the efficient use of the client’s proprietary formula was required to calculate the cost difference between regular and solar energy for various time periods.
  • The app would be handling large amounts of data, which had to be kept safe. A secure database and infallible data encryption were essential.

  • The application is capable to calculate the cost of solar energy system installation based on the geolocation as well as the regular energy cost charged by the local/zonal utility company. This was possible with the help of third-party integrations set up with the web app.
  • Robust reporting functionalities are added to make sure the users and other stakeholders could keep a track of their savings. Reports can be exported as PDF files.
  • MySQL, an extremely efficient and secure database is used to ensure data security. Tamper-proof provisions are also made to ensure only authorized users could access the reports.
