This delayed diagnosis increases treatment complexities and reduces the chances of the patient’s survival. There are also several cases of incorrect diagnosis that lead to skin cancer-related casualties.

Our client wanted to make use of cutting-edge technologies to develop an application that can be used to quickly and accurately diagnose skin cancer, ensure timely diagnosis and treatment for more people, and prevent related deaths.

The client wanted to build a solution that could create waves in the ocean of skin cancer-related diagnostic technology. Their key asks for the project included:

• A solution that can minimize the chances of misdiagnosis of skin cancer by avoiding human errors.
• The client wanted to leverage machine learning to enable the early detection of skin cancer.
• An easy-to-use solution that can be used remotely even by semi-skilled paramedics.

Business Needs Synopsis

Based on our discussion with the client’s C-level management team, we outlined the following actionable business needs:

• The client did not have a website for promoting and presenting their machine learning-based cancer detection solution. A fully functional, visually appealing, and search engine-friendly website was their primary business need.
• As our client mentioned, the solution had to be accessible remotely, a cross-platform mobile app had to be developed. The app also needed to be extremely user-friendly to ensure use even by semi-skilled healthcare professionals. This was important to maximize the use of the application and minimize the cases of undiagnosed/misdiagnosed cases of skin cancer claiming lives.
• The solution required seamless integration with machine learning.
• Due to data security and privacy requirements while handling sensitive patient data, the security of the app was imperative.

To meet the outlined business goals for our client, the team of developers at SynergyTop delivered the following solutions within a time frame of 4 months:

• A custom website was developed for the client. This website was the digital address of our client’s ML-based cancer detection project and the first point of contact for potential users.
• A responsive cross-platform mobile app that can be installed in any Android or iOS Smartphone to ensure remote access was also developed using React Native.
• The application’s User Interface (UI) was kept clean and intuitive and the navigation was made simple to ensure that use by semi-trained medical professionals who serve remote areas.
• The process of using the application is also simple. Images of the patient’s skin can be clicked using the mobile phone app and then uploaded into different models to generate ML-based results that can be used to detect the presence of skin cancer.
• With the use of AWS Cognito for login authentication, the application was made gated and can only be used by authorized personnel. The provision for an OTP-based login added another layer of security to the application.
• There is a provision for adding multiple projects in the app so that more datasets can be used for creating multiple models and experimenting to continuously improve the efficiency of the application. There is also an admin panel from where our client can manage the model training.
• Serverless architecture was used to keep the app lightweight and responsive.
